Colitis, Crohn’s, IBD
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), covers a range of conditions such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. They are chronic, relapsing and remitting disorders characterized by excessive inflammatory responses in the gastrointestinal tract. Symptoms include: bleeding, diarrhoea, abdominal cramping and in severe cases malnutrition. Pharmaceutical treatments currently available can only reduce the symptoms of these debilitating conditions.

Endocannabinoid system for treatment of gastrointestinal diseases
There are anecdotal reports that people with IBD experience relief when smoking marijuana, suggesting a protective role for CB receptors and the ECS in intestinal inflammation. An anti-inflammatory role for CB receptors has been demonstrated in several studies of chemically induced colitis in mice – the ECS may, therefore, play a protective role in IBD (i.e. that upregulation of ECS components could positively influence disease progression)”
